On a lazy Wednesday evening, I was walking back from work. The sun was ready to bid farewell for the day and was giving away the warmth for one last time before the cold winter night sets in. I wait for the signal to cross.
A chilly wind breeze past. I shiver.
As I cross the road, I see her. A stranger.
The last rays of twilight glowed her face. Her eyes radiating with joy, and exhilaration, and euphoria. Her hair dancing to the tunes of the wind. Her lips whispering a sweet melody. Our eyes meet.
Our eyes meet, and we smile. And at that moment, our hearts resonate.
For a moment, time slows down. For a moment, our eyes are locked. For a moment, we linger.
And then, we move on.
We cross each other, and we become strangers. Again.
I cross the road and look back. She was gone. That moment was gone.
The cold wind picks up pace. I tuck my hands in the jacket. The dying sun oddly illuminates the serpentine road. I stroll down following the light. Alone. My footsteps bear a strange reverberation. As if they are in resonance with someone else. I look back.
I am alone.
I remember the girl. I remember when we crossed each other.
We were strangers. But for a moment, our souls found solace. For a moment, our hearts beat as one. For a moment, we were as intimate as imaginable. For a moment, we forgot our moribund soul.
Now, we are strangers. Now, I have to walk alone.
I tremble. Must be the cold.
The sun is now gone. Darkness starts to shroud over. I have to reach home before it gets colder. I have to find my home before the last light of the dying ember vanishes.
I pick up the pace.
